Prof. Watson received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1974. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Computer Science, Department of Mathematics, and Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He has published well over 300 refereed journal articles and 200 refereed conference papers. His research interests include fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, numerical analysis, optimization, parallel computation, mathematical software, image processing, and bioinformatics. He is a fellow of the National Institute of Aerospace and the International Society of Intelligent Biological Medicine.
Abstract
Mathematical software is quite different from other types of software, typically taking a decade to develop and having a shelf life of several decades (numerical linear algebra and special function code from the 1970s is still in use today). This talk will address mathematical software for three different types of continuous optimization problems: global, stochastic, and multiobjective. The context is large scale scientific computation on parallel supercomputers.
